Employment in Highgate Before Independence
When Jamaica gained independence, the population of Highgate was about three thousand people. They were employed by one of the largest Banana producing farms in Jamaica; by sugar plantations and the Grays Inn Sugar Factory; by the Cadbury Chocolate Factory, many small farms and a medley of other kinds of occupations.
Inflowing funds facilitated bustling commerce such carpentry, cabinet building, dress making, small business development such as stores, a theatre, gas stations, bakeries and food markets. It also facilitated an active parish council collecting taxed to build and repair roads, keeping the marketplace active and providing employment in many other areas.
