High Ranking Scholarship Recipient: Education is a critical step towards economic development. That’s why we began by providing scholarship for needy children who have demonstrated ability and desire to attend educational institutions.
In 2015 one of our scholarship recipients, Monique Clarke, graduated from St. Mary High School, ranked number one in this most prestigious school.
A letter from the principal described her as an outstanding student of the category “Excellent” in the school’s Academic Performance Key.
Highgate Primary and Junior School: According to Douglas McIntosh of Jamaica Information Services the government of Japan has provided grants totaling $24 million (US$195,817) to fund expansion of the Highgate Primary and Junior High School and Middleton Primary School in St. Thomas. Although this is not a UFOH accomplishment it is a noteworthy accomplishment for the school.
Highgate’s leading Jamaican charity, UFOH, has provided assistance to the Primary and Junior High School for the past ten years. We have provided scholarships for students leaving from this school to the St. Mary High School. We have helped furnish the school with a water cooler, computers, a microwave oven an electric bell and school supplies such as books, pens, pencils erasers and calculators.
Computers for St. Mary High School: In September 2016 the Daily Gleaner, under its headline, “US-Based Charity Donates 48 Laptop To ST Mary High” reported that
“Students and staff at St Mary High School in Highgate, St Mary, celebrated Monday night after a US charity, dedicated to regenerating Highgate, donated 48 laptops to help upgrade the school’s computer room. The Principal Jullet Frazer-Sadaar thanked United Friends of Highgate (UFOH) for their generosity, and urged its members to continue on their mission to improve the education, health care, and social welfare systems in Highgate and throughout St Mary”.
Accompanying the computers were 27 school bags with pens, pencils and other school supplies.
Books for The Library: The Highgate library is housed in a small building at the foot of the entrance to St. Mary Highgate School.
The education committee has recognized a need for upgrading the library and has begun by donating books.
