Help our Children in Highgate
Efforts in Highgate
Our efforts in Highgate, whether to help our children, create jobs or help the needy are all tied together; helping people to help themselves. But helping our children is most critical. Think about it, offering our children a happy, healthy and educated childhood must lead to a stable, sustainable community that, one day, will not need our help.
Our Children
In January 1960, two years before Jamaica’s independence, the St. Mary High School was opened. It joined Highgate Primary School, Marymount High School, Highgate Continuation School and a number of private and infant schools to serve the Highgate community. Highgate was considered the seat of education in the parish of St. Mary.
According to the Highgate Demographic Profile, children in the age group 0-14 represents a significant proportion (32.9%) of residents in the Highgate community. This figure is above the national percentage of 27.17%. This is the age group that demands the largest share of Highgate’s resources, not only because they represent the largest age group in the community, but they are Highgate’s future.
