The United Friends of Highgate
A 501 (C) 3 Non-Profit Organization
The United Friends of Highgate (UFOH) is the first organization committed to the town of Highgate in Jamaica. Although our focus is Highgate, we are campaigning for a better Jamaica; a safe, healthy and enjoyable place to work, live and play. We are a group of volunteers dedicated to using our talents and experience to help develop the town by calling on community leaders and citizens to join together in this effort. We are independent of any political interest and support all religious denominations in the community.
Our mission is to support the economic, educational and social development of the town of Highgate.
This mission is dear to our hearts because we are concerned about the town we knew as children; where, at that time, the population was no more than three thousand people. Today it is populated by nearly ten thousand. But it’s not the steady growth in population that alarms us, it’s the growth without a plan; a growth without expanding infrastructure such as roads, schools or suitable leisure centers.
This spontaneous growth is the breeding ground for crime; nourishment for unemployment and fuel for poverty and decadence –conditions that are rapidly growing today. We realize that our beautiful island is stymied by one major factor; crime. Whereas Highgate was, for the most part, crime free today we are witnessing its expansion.
This rising increase in criminality is a result of; unemployment; insufficient affordable health care; expensive or unavailable nourishing food; lack of facilities for the poor; amenities for the homeless; an overpopulated and ill-equipped school system; dirty and small roadways and the list goes on. Maybe of greatest importance is the underpopulated and ill-equipped police force, unable to effectively stop intruding criminal elements or successfully fight crime.
We firmly believe that if we can get to the root of the cause of criminal activity we will be able to “chop it down”. Although we did not launch UFOH for this purpose it has became, by default, a primary focus of our mission.
We are confident that if we can successfully encourage the leaders of the Highgate community to unify and work together our small community will not only prosper but cause other communities to do so as well and, as a result, make our island safer as well as a better place to work, live and play.
But UFOH is not only tasked with bring the community together. We have two chapters, one in Highgate and the other in Florida. Highgate chapter provides information on community needs. These include the needs of our schools such as scholarships, computers and books; for health care such as equipment, supplies, medical and dental attention, social amenities such as food, shelter and clothing for the poor and disfranchised. The Florida chapter task is to fund projects satisfying these needs.
We need your help because the success of our organization and outreach is dependent entirely upon funds from you as well as our own promotional efforts.
