The United Friends of Highgate
Ten Years Accomplishments: The United Friends of Highgate’s mission is to help in the development of Highgate. We spent our first ten years helping the community at the micro level. Our strategy was to accumulate funds by using our own money to plan and promote events that yield profits. We have experienced tremendous success, mainly because of our enthusiasm towards our mission and the love we share since childhood. We have also been very fortunate to have in our membership individuals, from other parts of the world as well as other parishes in Jamaica join us and share in this affection for each other and caring for our beloved community and island.
The funds we obtain was used to purchase products such as medicine, medical supplies and equipment, scholarships, food and other goods and services. We willingly utilized our skills and expertise in ways that benefitted the community especially the poor and needy. All our accomplishments were a joint partnership between our chapter in Highgate and members here in Florida.
Community Involvement: We began by engaging the leaders and citizens of the community in a participatory manner. We introduced our organization to the community at our first dinner meeting held at the Saint Cyprians Church. Our team informed the Highgate community of our intentions and asked for their blessings and support. Many community leaders and citizen welcomed us and pledged their support. Since then we have partnered with local institutions and social organizations such as the Health Center, Schools and Lions Club to help meet our mission.
Published Accomplishments: Over the past ten years our efforts in providing both financial and non-financial support, which has helped to alleviate the sufferings of the needy (both children and adults), have been recognized and appreciated nationally. Many of our accomplishments have been published in the two leading newspapers and other media in the island as well as in the Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach areas of South Florida.
Moving Forward: Despite these accomplishments, we are acutely aware that our efforts, if kept at the micro level, will fade and die as we do. It is an imperative that we build a sustainable organization to address long-term needs such as community development at the macro level. It is our belief that our mission is a constant work-in-progress and that all accomplishments; the huge ones and the small quiet ones, all help to drive our mission. Our accomplishments, over this first ten years of operations therefore, is merrily a prelude to the task and accomplishments we plan for the coming ten years.
